National Popular and Agrarian Mobilization

Due to the grave crisis in which Colombian popular sectors find themselves in under the government of Álvaro Uribe Vélez, a grand national mobilization is being convened by campesino, worker and grassroots organizations, as well as international solidarity organizations and persons. Our invitation is for people at a national and international level to unite with our struggle and share and spread information about our country’s situation. In this moment, we are organizing the mobilization, but the armed forces and paramilitaries are applying repressive measures in different regions of the country in order to block our organization and stop the mobilization from happening. In spite of these measures, the people are committed to carrying out this mobilization at all costs.

Why are the people mobilizing?

The country’s current crisis demands that Colombians take a stand against this government of poverty and terror, and to demand the immediate resignation of president Álvaro Uribe Vélez, who twice came to power by way of electoral fraud. His policies have been completely against the needs of the people and poverty has increased to a subhuman level, reflected in massive displacement from the countryside to the city (more than 4 million people), and in a repressive plan called “Democratic Security” which affects all popular sectors. This plan only assures that the property of the rich is maintained and increased, while the military and paramilitaries (who never demobilized) continue to violate the people’s rights through selective assassinations, massacres, disappearances, forced displacement and threats against communities.

The Colombian state, far from protecting the people’s interests, is in charge of guaranteeing the exploitation of natural resources through the control over land and concessions to big transnational companies. To do this they must create laws that justify the state’s actions and tactics such as food and sanitary blockades, constant fumigations and the militarization of the country. The Colombian campesinos live in fear of the constant presence of the military and paramilitaries, now called “Black Eagles”, and other now-legalized paramilitaries.

We are making a call out to the international community to support our mobilization, to spread information and making your protest actions be heard in the president’s office.

For the defense of land and national sovereignty!
